About this Course

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a traditional system of wellness that has been practiced for centuries. It is based on concepts such as Qi, Yin and Yang, meridians, and the Five Elements, which are traditionally used to understand the body's overall balance and well-being.

TCM approaches may include traditional practices such as acupressure, acupuncture, dietary principles, movement practices and other complementary techniques. These approaches are traditionally used to support relaxation, body awareness and overall wellness.

Our approach focuses on understanding traditional TCM principles while promoting a balanced and mindful wellness lifestyle.

Important: TCM is a complementary wellness approach and should not replace diagnosis or treatment provided by a qualified medical professional.

Key Concepts of TCM

Traditional Chinese Medicine includes several fundamental concepts that are used to understand the body from a traditional perspective.

  • Qi: Traditionally described as the vital energy associated with the body's functions and balance.
  • Yin & Yang: Complementary concepts used to describe balance and opposing qualities within traditional TCM theory.
  • Meridians: Traditional pathways through which Qi is believed to flow.
  • Five Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, which are traditionally associated with different aspects of body and lifestyle patterns.
  • Acupressure Points: Specific points traditionally stimulated through controlled pressure.

Meridian System

Meridians are an important part of traditional TCM theory. They are described as pathways that connect different areas of the body and are traditionally associated with the flow of Qi.

The traditional meridian system includes:

  • Lung Meridian
  • Large Intestine Meridian
  • Stomach Meridian
  • Spleen Meridian
  • Heart Meridian
  • Small Intestine Meridian
  • Urinary Bladder Meridian
  • Kidney Meridian
  • Pericardium Meridian
  • Triple Burner / San Jiao Meridian
  • Gallbladder Meridian
  • Liver Meridian

TCM also describes additional pathways and extraordinary vessels that are studied within traditional practice.

Five Element Theory

The Five Element Theory is a traditional TCM framework involving five interconnected elements:

  • 🌿 Wood
  • 🔥 Fire
  • 🌍 Earth
  • ⚙️ Metal
  • 💧 Water

These elements are traditionally used to understand relationships between different aspects of the body, emotions, seasons, lifestyle and natural patterns.
